Mea Culpas and Various Gloating

First the mea culpas. I was way off on my state-wide predictions. I really thought Mark Taylor was going to do better than 38%, which is why the Libertarian (who pulled at least 4%) would have thrown it into a runoff. However, I'm glad it's over. Talk about your choice between Dumb and Dumber (I'll leave the readers to plug in who's who).

Jim Martin did better state-wide than Taylor, as did Jane Kidd in her district, but neither was close in the end. I didn't predict SoS, but I would have guessed Gail Buckner would have done better than she did.

Looks like the only Democratic statewide bright spots were Thurbert Baker and Athenian Mike Thurmond. And Carol Hunstein, if you believe she's "one of them activist, liberal jerdges".

Locally, I did much better in my predictions. Right on Heidi/Charlie, right on Girtz/Sheats, and half-right on McKillip/Culpepper. Turns out the ABH endorsement flap was a non-starter, but I didn't think McKillip would take more than 50%.

So, we have the prospect of four more weeks of mayoral campaigning. History favors the runner-up in these things (the one exception being the Chisholm/Overend solicitor scrap last summer, but that was damn close), so Heidi shouldn't assume 45% was a "near victory". The flip side is 55% of the city/county didn't support her, so Charlie could and will make up big ground. Should be a long four weeks.

And how weird will it be to see candidates out at the mall campaigning during the Christmas shopping season? Ho, Ho, Ho.

the new controversy simmering, maybe soon brought to the public:

evidence that McKillip didn't live in the district when he qualified . . .

Hi Guys

Personally, I am glad that it is all over. I do not envy the folks who have to stay in campaign mode for another month.

In District 1, I concentrated on running a campaign that focused exclusively on my positions and policy proposals. As it turns out, the voters chose someone else (though I did make a respectable showing). So be it.

I feel that this blog has always treated me fairly and for that I am grateful.

What is the heck is this residency thing about mcKillip???? If there are facts about this, put it out on the blog....... and why did this not come up during the campaign............

I don't know what's more disappointing. The fact that the politics of personal destruction is still being waged on Doug McKillip even after he just won this election by 28% or the fact that supposedly progressive people have been taken in by this bullshit. Not only did Doug live in this district when he qualified, he lived in the district a year before the election like he had to in order to qualify. Come to think of it, Doug was BORN in this district.

kudos to you James Garland, you ran a good campaign, you put yourself out there and gave the voters a choice.....we cannot control the decision of the voters and if you had been in my district, I might have voted for you!!!

BORN in the district...BFD.

Also, it seems like you might be the one being taken in...check the facts.

How about you post the facts, anonymous person.

hillary said...

Also, by "facts," I do not mean "allegations." I mean hard data. I poked around on the ACC tax assessor's site and couldn't find much, but it's not that up to date.

Anonymous said...

Why would you poke around ACC tax assessors? He was living in Oconee County.

Anonymous said...

Okay, I'll play this game. Oconee County, please tell me where he lived in Oconee County when he qualified. Given I was actually at his house at 105 Telfair the same week that he qualified. But please, please tell me where he really lived. The curiousity is killing me. Absolutely pathetic.

C'mon. I went to highschool w/Doug's sister Jenny, he's from here, HELLO??? and for anyone to have sour grapes or new information about him now is just kinda tacky. Print it out for us or hushya, plz.

Rumsfeld is out, y'all! They're replacing him w/ a guy from the CIA, Robert Gates.

Of course he's just another bushipoo but at least they're going to be getting that report from Baker (how convenient is all this timing, eh?) and well, it's good, better late than never, I guess.

Now, as far as the run-offs, I hope we will not all be so burnt out that we let these campaigns slide by w/out our help. Take a day or two, sure, but then lets see if there are envelopes to lick or neighborhoods to walk Heidi and Kelly thru...

we deserve progressive leadership in athens, y'all, don't let the chamber strategy for non partisan elections prove effective for them. HELP!

To see when he bought his house in Athens.

His address listed in the phone book is 1551 Jennings Mill Road, in Bogart. Is that his business office?

If he lives on Telfair, here's what the TA office says:

The property was transferred from Mary McKillip's name to Doug McKillip's name January 1, 2006. Mary McKillip (Doug's wife) is listed as buying it from "North Carlton" on September 16, 2005. They (NC) bought it from Ajax Properties on March 12, 2004.

Telfair Court is on Epps Bridge Parkway, well inside the Athens loop perimeter.

Presumably, the qualifying date for 115 was some time after January 1, no?

It really sucks for EH or Regina. People on this blog continue to put out these false smears about Doug and it makes EH and Regina look really, really petty. They don't seem like the type of people that would stoop to this level, but I guess somebody has.

Anonymous said...

The qualifying date is one year before the election - which is November 8 2005. I'll remind you that Doug and Mary are married and live together like most married people do. So, Doug and Mary have lived in the district since September 16, 2005 which satisfies the law. Since Doug was born in Athens and has lived in Athens his whole life (even for the short time that he lived in Oconee County his mailing address was still Athens), I don't think anyone will be so petty as to say he has not upheld the spirit of geographical representation. Though there has been some hardcore pettiness with regards to Doug.

hillary said...

Well, good. There we go. Facts are awesome.

(Also, I voted for Doug.)

Anonymous said...

Yeah, isn't it great when we live in a fact based world. I know we haven't been living in a fact based world recently with Republicans in power but there seems to be hope for the future. ; )

Anonymous said...

Yes it's amazing how nice facts are when compared with petty rumors. It's been really disapointing to see how Doug has be slammed on this blog by some people. I believe some were predicting a Regina and EH runoff. However, instead of being mean about this I'll simply say.... SCOREBOARD.

Doug will be a great state rep. and congratulations to him and his campaign. Their message clearly resonated with a lot of people.

Anonymous said...

Though I have been posting recently regarding Doug's residency, I assure you that I did not post the "Scoreboard" post. While I encourage Doug's supporters to be enthusiastic about what we have accomplished, I encourage y'all not to do it at the expense of the other candidates. EH and Regina both ran a great race and brought a lot of good ideas to the table. Specifically, I really like Regina's idea about allocating funding to needy schools. I'm only jealous I didn't think of it first. As someone who has been appalled at the partisanship on both sides of the aisle, EH's message was very refreshing as well. - robert

I must agree with Hilary...Facts ARE awesome.

"Mary McKillip (Doug's wife) is listed as buying it from "North Carlton" on September 16, 2005."

"North Carlton" is probably Carlton North, infamous local developer, and winner of the A-CC lottery.

Hillary, I'm glad you voted for Doug -- because he's not a developer and the ABH endorsed him.

Qualifying week was in late April.

a little less botox, pls Nancy...

oh good grief, y'all, here we are quibbling about who lived where when and Nancy is on tv on the newshour right now trying to whittle her way out of having called GW shallow. shallowness, lol...

oh the sincerity is just killing me. I really like Nancy Pelosi, but she is not coming accross well here.

She did make the point that Rumsfeld works for Bush and the policy for the war is Bush's, not Donalds. Then she kind of lost me into a blah blah blah blah peanuts school teacher kind of on and on.

oh well, she's our gal, I'm waiting to see what they do.

I fear Nancy and anyone that finds her likeable in any way. This woman is a half-step to the right of Karl Marx. How she has risen to such quick power in the Democratic party shows just how out-of-step with "mainstream" America. But the Dems won fair and square so we'll live with the consequences. Meanwhile our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves.

As for Douggy-M, I am glad to know that A/CC will vote for anyone with a "D" next to their name without thought or consideration. This guy lied his way through the campaign with absolutely no consequence. And, if you try to argue about the voting for "D's" without thought, explain the Mark Taylor and Jim Martin majorities as well as the Guy Drexinger close call. These folks couldn't get a third of the vote outside of A/CC yet they are political stars within these boundaries. Ugly, ugly picture.

Anonymous said...

ooh goody- cool, a scared republican... i thought y'all just used fear to gain the stupid vote.

hoist thee on your own pertrard, will ya?

after all, that's the lowest common denominator y'all can hit, ain't it?

tsk tsk tsk, ugly is as ugly does.

Anonymous said...

Truth be told, I voted for about 60% R and 39.5% D - with 1 I mixed in for the 0.5%. That's assuming I've guessed correctly on the non-partisan locals. Just making the point that I'm no more a "y'all" than a yella dog. But I'm starting to think I'm the last person to vote by person rather than by label.

Anonymous said...

I am not a developer, the ABH endorsed me and, yes, I was living at Telfair Place in ACC on September 16, 2006. Oh, and by the way, I have a lot in Oconee County I'd like to sell you which overlooks the ocean.

Anonymous said...

Shoot, Doug might be a developer, the endorsed candidate of the ABH and someone who lives by the ocean, but he also happens to have the endorsement of a hell of a lot of people. Just get over the fact that your candidate lost big and stop these ridiculous personal attacks. It's just as bad as all the foolish stuff you accuse Doug of.

His campaign manager was a lot more magnanomous than I would have been btw.

Why is being a half-step to the right of Karl Marx a bad thing?

The Founding Fathers rolled in their graves when the people were allowed to directly elect their senators. We tend to forget that, for the most part, those who drafted the Constitution distrusted us, ordinary people. So, why should we care what those rotting corpses do?

Also, no one who gets elected in American politics is that far left. Unfortunately.

As Appeared in today's ABH:

McKillip didn't lie in endorsement claim

Regarding the Athens Banner-Herald's Nov. 3 editorial, "McKillip may not be ready for public office," I'd like to point out the newspaper's Oct. 24 endorsement of independent candidate E.H. Culpepper in the state House District 115 race did, in fact, also include an "endorsement" of Doug McKillip, the eventually victorious Democratic candidate in the race.

Indeed, when I read the Oct. 24 editorial endorsing Culpepper, I was surprised to read at the end of the piece that the newspaper seemed to second-guess itself, noting, "We were impressed by McKillip's passion for public service and his commitment to education ... ." Was the Banner-Herald hedging its bets?

How can the Banner-Herald, as it did in its Nov. 3 editorial challenging the McKillip campaign ads that mentioned the Oct. 24 endorsement editorial, reconcile describing those ads as both a "lie," and as being "technically correct." It can't be both. McKillip simply quoted your own words in praise of him. To call that a lie is neither "technically correct" nor worthy of your publication. As an Athens native, I'm ashamed of the Banner-Herald's 11th-hour mudslinging.

Anonymous said...

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about this ad out there as well.

The ad said the following:

Novartis said Education is the reason Athens was passed up for their $1 billion vaccine plant.

As the endorsed candidate of the Georgia Association of Educators, Doug McKillip believes we need to address this problem.

In fact, the Athens Banner-Herald's endorsement said "We were impressed by McKillips passion for public service and his committment to education as a key to quality economic developement."

I'm Doug McKillip and I approved this message because I believe Education is the key to a prosperous Athens.

Douggie-M = a loss for Athens. It's just a shame the R's had to throw Ms. Quick out there to split their other candidate's vote. Pretty poor planning.
