This is old news by now, but still worth commenting on: State Senator Ralph Hudgens officially opted out of the 10th congressional district dog and pony show yesterday.
"After three weeks of campaigning, it became very evident that I don't have the fire in the belly, I didn't have what it takes," said Hudgens, a Comer Republican.
"Since Hudgens is keeping his seat in the state Senate, former state Sen. Brian Kemp won't be able to run for it. Kemp, an Athens Republican, had announced plans to run and was considered a near-lock to win back a Senate seat."
As a reader in the comments queried, why isn't Brian Kemp considering jumping into the congressional race, especially since his name recognition (from his statewide race for Ag commish) is higher than virtually every other candidate running?
Blake also raises the possibility that Hudgens' departure might be good news for Doc Eldridge, which is interesting. After hearing and reading various scuttle the past few weeks, I had thought Doc wasn't going to jump in.

Doc has been said to be considering a run for weeks. I am starting to think he just may like to see his name in the paper. He needs to pull the trigger on this thing and show he does have "the fire in the belly" and announce.
That being said, while his name recognition in Athens is decent (but fading fast) no one has heard of him anywhere else. And coming from "liberal" Athens he may have a tough time appealing to the voters of the 10th.
It just makes sense to me that Brian should run for Congress. He has just gotten through a statewide campaign and is touted as one of the bright stars of the Republican party. What better way to test that star power than to aim for Congress? Of all the wannabes in Athens, he is the only one with a legitimate shot.
Maybe he is not of the standard hate-filled Republican type that is required for the district but isn't that a good thing? The Republican party is losing ground. People are tired of their bible-thumpin' hate and maybe Brian would be a positive alternative. Conservative yet reasonable.
Brian has already been in the state senate. He has made the jump to state-wide campaigning and I think it is time he tried for Congress. And he should strike now while his name recognition is still strong from his last campaign for ag commish. If he doesn't win then he can always look again at the state senate in 08.
I heard that somebody was polling the 10th district a few weeks ago. Does anyone know who that was?
I heard Ralph was polling. I wouold love to see the cross-tabs. If our 'ol buddy Doc isn't in and raising money, then he just loves that people keep talking to him about it. (This country club set of Athens dinosaurs just cant admit their own extinction.) Jim Whitehead is full-on racing already, and will simply get such a jump on everyone that it won't matter. He will come in first, and depending on how many delusional dems get in it, Jim will shoot the Terry Holley "fish in a bucket" or we will have a R-R runoff.
Yes it did appear that Brian was staying with the state senate but now today's ABH reports that he has not yet made up his mind and "is going to hang loose here for a few days." You know he is considering the 10th !!!
Terry Holley isn't going to be the Democratic Candidate. The party already has another candidate that they will be getting behind.
Thirty whatever percent of the people already voted for Terry Holley once. Who is going to show up with enough money to drive up name recognition (if they don't already have it - and I haven't heard of any dems with a name seriously considering it) and get sufficient votes to get at least second? And, unless he is dropping out, he seems convinced that he will be "a" dem candidate, if not "the" dem candidate. I also heard that the party was over (see "broke") and so what difference does it make, really, if the party is behind someone or not. Shouldn't they save face and cash and concentrate on seats for which the odds arn't quite so long?
Bill Greene is going to take this. Things are setting up very nice and he has hired a top notch staff from what I have heard.
Bill Greene doesn't stand a chance. Jim Marlowe may be the mystery Democrat in the race, and he does have connections in the northern tier of the counties involved.

Bill Greene is building a strong team. He will have the right wring support. Even Alan Keys is in his camp.

Terry Holley spent $20,000 on his name recognition last time and now has the added feature of people recognizing his name as a loser. The fact that the party is not behind him will dry up whatever fundraising he might have thought about having. I think Holley has been in politics long enough to realize he needs to step aside. The rumor is James Marlowe is going to be the candidate. Apparently he is an attorney for the search engine yahoo.

I must disagree. Whitehead's the man to beat right now, based on name recognition and the endorsements that are rolling in from the GOP leadership. He'll turn out the area around Augusta, which is what he'll need.

Alan Keys Plays very well with the conversative base. He also will help to raise a ton of money from the DC area for Greene. Greene also as that website he started that gives him high name id. Plus that good staff

This race is over before it starts. Whitehead with an Augusta name and support in Atlanta. The no-name republicans will get strong-armed out, and any other R with any shot at taking a respectable percentage will be bought off and offered something to get out of the way (some nothing position on some state board of whatever...) The R's are organized, have the power and the money right now, and are not going to let this be a free-for-all. Why would they? If you can change the rules, and eliminate some players, you do it. Unless the dems show up with a big name or BIG money, it won't matter.

That's a bit misleading since he was run over by the Obama juggernaut and had moved from Maryland into Illinois, which is a fairly progressive state anyway, to run.
But I still question how effective his alleged endorsement will be. I think it's between Whitehead, Elderidge (if he runs) and the Democratic challenger (if it's someone other than Holley).

Shocking. Just as soon as the race heats up, you see a new commenter ("Donald") commenting here and on Peach Pundit, bashing Whitehead and puffing up Greene.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, just know the source. This guy's probably a plant.
