An AthPo Caption Contest! Maddox needs a new slogan.

So, Hillary and I were talking this afternoon (yeah, candidates, we bloggers do talk amongst ourselves quite frequently), and I learned that she hadn't yet seen Charlie Maddox's campaign literature. A quick tango with the scanner, and behold.

If you haven't seen Mr. Maddox's pushcard yet, it's terrible. As in, comparable to his website in quality. (To be fair, the actual piece is in color.)

Hillary and I and Mr. Brown were trading snarky slogans to accompany the terrible picture. Long story short, she suggested we open it up for the Athens politico-sphere in general. Herein, please find the picture from Mr. Maddox's hand piece. Go nuts. Whosoever writes the best caption gets to make out with the anonymous poster of their choice. I'll lead off.

"Isn't it time we had a Mayor who isn't afraid to stand up to the giant eagles? Isn't it time for Charlie Maddox?"

(One other note. Athens voters aren't stupid. Put some damn issues on your literature.)

Giant eagles ruining your life? There's got to be a better way. Vote Maddox
(paid for by swiftboat veterans against eagles)

Vote for me or this Giant Eagle will feed me to her hatchlings.

do eagles eat oreos?

If you all keep poking fun at Charlie, he's going to wise up and fix his campaign and nobody really wants that to happen.

Still, I vote Andy Rusk for the best one-liners.

Sources close to the Maddox campaign tell me that a new piece of literature has been designed. It's apparently much better, and more in keeping with a serious campaign.

Don't be fooled by Maddox's campaign, kids. I don't know what to think of him, but as far as help goes, he has some pretty knowledgeable folks on his side.

Now if they could only get a better website.

Hello, I'm Charlie Maddox and I'm not sure why my picture is on here but this is what my friends at the Chamber told me to do and they had all these swell cards left over from the Herman Caine campaign so, why not use them?

Pssst! Doc? what am I running for, again?

current favorite Maddox line of substance:
"People keep trying to pin me down on this issue and that issue, and I can't get into all that, but...I will do the right thing for the right reasons"

"Proof Positive that the Chamber has backed another loser."

Really though, if the Chamber wants to get rid of Heidi so badly, why don't they just endorse her?

I'm curious to know what everyone thinks about Jane's seat. What are y'all hearing about Doug McKillip, Regina Quick, or E.H. Culpepper?

Maddox has a new push card - I saw it today. No eagles but a lot of turkeys!
The inside has a group shot that includes about half the Clarke County Republicans and virtually ALL of the truly crazy, nasty ones!

So much for a non-partisan election - it's the Republican candidate Charlie Maddox vs. the true Democrat Heidi Davison with Tom Chasteen out there still looking for love in all the wrong places and coming up blank.

While this string didn't start with the Solicitor General's race, it sure would be nice if you put together some pros and cons of each party in the run-off.

In my opinion, C.R. has the skills and experience to run this department well. And, as some rumors have it, he is the only one not to be prosecuted by the Solicitor General office. If that is the case, that should be a valuable piece of data when considering the chad to punch.

Information will set you free...

"the only one not to be prosecuted by the Solicitor General office"

Perhaps that makes him less qualified?

Also, I don't see how this is inconsistent: These same love the elimination of poverty but hate the folks who control wealth and earnings. Um, yes. Because those bitches won't give it up. That shouldn't be a "but." It should be an "and."

Being a local attorney and keeping up with this race, there is no doubt that the SG rumors are coming out of the courthouse. It is no secret that the majority of everyone that works with the Solicitor's office (judges, police, court reporters, etc) want Chisolm elected. They know he will work hard.

Currently Wiltshire not getting the job done because this job at minimum is 8-5 M-F with a couple weeks vacation, and Wiltshire does not like this structured set of hours. Many feel Overend will be the same.

As one prominent attorney said the other day, Overend must have woke up one morning and said I think I will run for a political office. I have been a bartender, a journalist, bar owner, went to law school, worked in the DA's office and now in private practice-I need a change and his family's money affords him these frequent career changes.

I'm always torn about putting in my two cents about these two -- I know them both well, and I really wouldn't be sorry to see either in the position. Yes, CR is more organized and wonky than Bill. CR is also way more straight-laced than Bill. I think that Bill has had a much wider range of experience than CR, and therefore would make a more practical prosecutor than CR. That being said, Bill's neighborhood speed zone crap is blatant pandering to the Neighborhood Nazis (TM) in Five Points, and I think demonstrably unconstitutional to boot.

Athens already has a reputation as being extremely harsh town when it comes to dealing with alcohol violations, and it's only getting worse. I think Bill, much more than CR, realizes that some alcohol prosecutions are not the end of the world, and that maybe some pragmatic choices need to be made. Yes, Bill isn't going to be in the office as much as CR, but that doesn't mean he's going to be an absentee SG. Ralph Powell wasn't in the office 8-5 every day, either, and I don't think anyone (other than the CPD) really had a criticsm of his office.

I voted for Overend in the primary but will vote for Chisholm in the runoff. My only reason is that Overend was kind of an @$$hole to me since I cast my original ballot.

I don't know how or why the debate has come down to whether one candidate will work harder in the office than the other. There is little empirical evidence to suggest that one or the other would. The question is whether that is the main criterion one should look at when making this choice.

The Solicitor-General deals with misdemeanors ... in volume. This office interacts with the citizens of Athens-Clarke County with great frequency, and among a wide range of issues. The way the SG's office is run, and the policies it propounds, can have a dramatic impact on the safety of our streets, on domestic violence, on our quality of life. The manner in which the SG's office interacts with the public can have a dramatic impact on individual person's lives.

The leader of this office will need to be able to deal with a changing demographic, become a leader in the drive to reduce poverty in the county, and address the particular problems that a town with a large University in its midst faces. Of the two, it seems clear which candidate has the knowledge of this county, the life experience, and the ability to work with the many aspects of this multi-faceted community. Of the two, it is apparent which will work to craft the effect the office has on the citizens of the community in a manner which best suits this particular city.

Against that, assertions that the other candidate might work harder just don't do it for me.

Both candidates are good guys. Overend is the right candidate for the job.

If this was a race for assistant solicitor, CR would be a good choice. But this is a race for Solicitor General. And that is a position that requires someone with the ability to stand up to a commission or a judge when constitutional rights are at issue. That is a position that requires someone able to set policy. That is a position that requires someone who can hire, train, and empower a staff. Bill Overend is undoubtedly the candidate who best can handle these duties, while at the same time understanding and exemplifying the uniqueness of Athens.
